Numerical methods and Hopf algebras of trees

Trees appeared as early as in the 19th century in analysis
(A. Cayley). A group structure showed up in the Sixties when J. Butcher used them intensively in numerical analysis (in particular for a better understanding of the Runge-Kutta methods). This group coincides with the character group of a Hopf algebra of trees unveiled by A. Connes and D. Kreimer in their work on renormalization in quantum field theory. This meeting aims to facilitate contacts between numerical analysis specialists and people coming from other fields of research (Physics, Algebra, Lie group theory, Combinatorics,...) around this challenging and rapidly growing topic.
